Open Aneurysm Repair

A surgical procedure to repair an aortic aneurysm by replacing the weakened artery section with a synthetic graft.

Open aneurysm repair is a traditional surgical procedure used to treat a large or ruptured aortic aneurysm, typically in the abdominal or thoracic aorta. It involves replacing the weakened, bulging section of the artery with a synthetic graft, restoring the normal diameter and strength of the vessel to prevent rupture.

During the procedure, the surgeon makes an incision in the abdomen or chest to expose the aneurysm. The aorta is temporarily clamped above and below the affected segment, the aneurysmal portion is removed or opened, and a Dacron or PTFE graft is sewn into place. Once secured, the clamps are released to restore blood flow through the graft.
